 Skin: A Taxing Proposition
Remember the Beatles’ song, em>
“………Now my advice for those who die, (taxman)
Declare the pennies on your eyes. (taxman)
'Cause I'm the taxman,
Yeah, I'm the taxman.
And you're working for no one but me.” [*]
Well, our President Obama has taken even this macabre prescription for tax collection to new levels of confiscation: He wants to tax the color of your skin.
That’s right, if you want to tan yourself through the use of a tanning bed, you will have to pay a 10% Federal tax on the charges.
This obscure provision was found in the massive health care bill that the Congressional Democrat’s are promulgating.
It was brought to public notice by an email sent around the internet by Darque Tan, the people whose business it is to turn your skin into the color of mocha java.
The danger is it could have unintended consequences; many laws create them at the time of promulgation. For example, what if you got tan by spending time at the beach, or in sun-drenched higher elevations? Would you have to pay 10% of any parking fee?
It makes perfect common sense; the result is exactly the same in both cases, whether toasted skin is produced by artificial or real sun.
These Obamamen and women are very, very smart. They’ve got it covered every which way.
But should you be one of the millions of Americans that use tanning services and don’t appreciate being taxed, simply write your congressperson.
As the tanning bed people strongly advise:
“This is a very serious threat so please contact any other salons in your area and spread the word about this legislation. Have your employees, friends and family call, email and write as well.” [**]
Just hope that your representatives have time to read and act on your email; preparing for their next television interview they may be out toning their skin at Darque Tan themselves.
