Americans, Unite!

I’m not much for the political anymore. Lord knows in the old days I was gung ho, all fired up, passionate as could be about the world of Washington bullsh*t, pardon my French. But things change, and so did I.

Nowadays I’m content to remain relatively informed, pay attention to the issues I care about, and otherwise lay low. No more heated debates for me, thankyouverymuch. But Election Day 2008 was a big deal, and I wanted to say a few words about the state of the union and the coming years.

Regardless of your political bent or your choice of presidential candidate, Nov. 4, 2008 was a groundbreaking day. We elected the first African-American president. That’s a country that’s come a long way since slavery and segregation.

So, even for those who are anti-Obama and swore they’d hightail it out of the U.S. if he won, it’s time to put those partisan divisions aside. The United States is all about unity, and it’s time to unite behind the man the majority of us chose. If we don’t come together now, we’ve got a rough future ahead of us. With all the conflict, economic and otherwise, someone has to put the pieces back together.

Hopefully Obama will be up for the job, but the rest of us have to rally. We have to rally behind our country and our leader, regardless of whose name we checked in the poll booth on Tuesday. Much like 9/11, when every American rallied behind George W., we have to do the same with Obama in January.

Our country is facing tough times, and when the going gets tough, the fragmented will crumble. We can’t be a fragmented population.

So, even for those who were chanting, “Nobama!,” the campaigning days are over. It’s time to put those hurt feelings aside and face the future together, with optimism and hope.

Change is coming, and every individual can either do their best to make a positive contribution, or they can grumble their way through and do nothing but hinder progress. It’s a personal choice, but I say – be positive! The future is bright.
