 We Have a Dream

Ours is a country in a desperate state. Sadly, much of the populus seems bereft of hope these days. With a long and drawn out war, a fading economy and millions of citizens without healthcare, many of us feel lost and terrified of what the future might bring.
But one candidate in this year's fight-to-the-death election has been bringing hope to voters in a way few politicians in history have. Most candidates do little more than espouse platitudes and incite fear. Few of them have the ability to inspire.
But Barack Obama seems to be one of those rare few, ranking among JFK and Reagan. He has brought young people back into the political scene the way no one has been able to do in decades.
While his policies and political stance are key elements of who he is, Obama's charisma and ability to inspire are what truly make him a remarkable candidate.
I'm sure the baby boomers remember vividly the days when JFK was alive and well, and they felt fired up about their future, and politics, and HOPE for a new tomorrow. Many feel that way about Obama today. He speaks to Americans in a voice of optimism, at a time when we are desperately in need of such a message. Why will I vote for Obama? Certainly, I like some of his policies. I want to see all Americans with health insurance, and help for a faltering middle class.
But more than that, Obama has given me hope. Hope that we can become more peaceful, more just and more generous as a society. Hope that our country can be, not a utopia, but a place of ongoing stability, where everyone has a chance at that great American dream that has led millions to seek our shores.
And hope is a very powerful thing. It goes further than experience, or political party, or even race. With hope, anything is possible.
